What is a filling?

A filling is a direct treatment for tooth damaged by decay or trauma that restores back to its normal function and shape.

This painless technique is performed under local anaesthesia and entails removing decay and filling the tooth cavity with a composite resin that matches the tooth’s natural colour.

Following the administration of anaesthesia, the dentist uses specialised rotating instruments to remove the decayed tissue. This process creates a clean cavity with specific characteristics to receive the filling material.

It’s critical to keep the tooth dry and avoid exposure to liquids such as saliva, water, or blood to bond the filling material to the tooth properly. Therefore, before filling, the tooth is isolated with a rubber dam. The rubber dam protects the patient from accidentally ingesting or inhaling tools or materials.

After filling the prepared cavity with the filling material, the composite resin is polymerised using a special light to facilitate curing.

To complete the procedure, the tooth is finished and polished and will appear in its original form.
